Chapter 20: The Second Phone Call

Shane picked up the phone on the first ring.

“Mr. Ryan.”

“Yup,” Shane answered, crushing his cigarette out in the ashtray. “So, where’s this little party going to be happening?”

“You’ll get a letter tomorrow. FedEx,” the man stated.

“So long as it’s not DHL, we’re good.”

The man chuckled. “Did you check on your friends?”

Shane repressed a shudder of anger. “Yup. Found out you tried to grab Frank, too. Didn’t work out so well for your guys.”

“No, it didn’t.” The stranger sighed. “Things happen. You know that.”

“Well, that happens with Frank. Things tend to go sideways.”

“What about your other New Hampshire friends?”

“What do you mean?” Shane straightened up in his seat.

“Oh, you haven’t checked on them yet. I’m sorry, that’s probably something you should do.”

“Who are you talking about?” Shane snapped.

The man hesitated, then replied. “Oh, what the hell. Why not? So, I’ll give you a couple of clues. First, one’s a lion that lives in a cage. The second two are like a bonded pair of dogs. They’re never not with each other. Same watering hole.”

Shane’s mind raced and then latched onto the answers.

“Arthur. John and Lawrence.”

“Hey, winner winner, chicken dinner!” the man on the other end laughed. “Nice. They said you were smart. I believed them, but it’s always nice to see it, too.”

“Are they dead?” Shane demanded.

“They’re not supposed to be,” the man answered, seriousness creeping back into his voice. “Arthur was roughed up a little more than the other two. In fact, you may want to go and check on him first. They were supposed to cut him loose, but we’ve had no contact with them. They were with a rough ghost who might have gotten carried away. Or, their coms might be down because of the ghost. As for the two older gents, I know they tried to go easy on them, but both men ended up in the hospital. I think the VA’s facility is near Concord but don’t quote me on it. I mean, if they haven’t come to yet, then they’re probably in one of the bigger hospitals. Or what passes for a bigger hospital in New Hampshire.”

Shane took a deep breath, let it out slowly through his nose and then chuckled.

“What’s funny?” the man on the other end asked.

“Nothing.” Shane shook out a fresh cigarette, lit it and exhaled. He watched the smoke dissipate as it curled up toward the ceiling. “Not a damned thing, actually. In fact, this is probably the least funny situation I could have imagined.”

“Well,” the man began.

“No,” Shane interrupted. “You don’t get to talk now.”

“You don’t—”

Shane hung up the phone.
